It’s no mean feat getting all the musicians together for a performance of chamber music works that require both string and wind instruments: fixed ensembles choose more common formations such as the string quartet or the wind quintet and invite guests from other instrument families for individual concerts. So it’s wonderful that SHMF family member Sabine Meyer has trusted musical friends she can call on for a performance of Franz Schubert’s great six-movement Octet in F major. This composer retrospective wouldn’t be complete without the octet because it is without doubt one of the most important 19th-century chamber music works. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet is also perfect for this format of music-making among friends. It’s one of the works in which his unwavering friendship with the clarinettist Anton Stadler manifests and his great veneration for Stadler’s exceptional talent breaks new ground.
