Russian Piano Quintets
Shostakovich / Arensky / Gnesin
Despite her glamorous solo career, Baiba Skride has remained faithful to chamber music. She has always performed publicly with her sister Lauma; now she appears in a larger piano quintet formation. Harriet Krijgh is part of the ensemble that performs together for the first time. Last season she was celebrated as a »Rising Star« in Hamburg, among other places.
This female ensemble has put together a unique programme. It allows the listener to explore three generations of Russian composers. The oldest is Anton Arensky, whose effective quintet includes a movement of variations based on the folk song »Sur le pont d’Avignon«. The middle-generation is represented by Mikhail Gnesin and his highly original »Requiem«. As the finale is Dmitri Shostakovich’s only piano quintet, a work exploding with suppressed drama.
