Richard Wagner’s »Das Rheingold«
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Marek Janowski
Please note the change in artist:
It is with deep regret that Thomas Hengelbrock has had to cancel his participation due to a health reasons. He is immensely grateful that conductor Marek Janowski will be stepping in for him.
»Hands off my Rhinegold score! I’m warning you mister, otherwise the devil will get you!« Fortunately, this truly Alberich-like curse inspired by Richard Wagner’s opera was not meant for Marek Janowski. It was directed towards the conductor Franz Wüllner, who, against Wagner’s will, premiered Rhinegold in 1869 without the other »Ring« operas. After all, »Das Rhinegold« was thought of as the expository first part of the epic mythological cycle.
The theft of the Rhinegold by the power hungry Nibelung chief Alberich triggers a chain of fateful events, which spread throughout the three subsequent »Ring« parts.
Marek Janowski, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and a battalion of internationally renowned Wagner singers once again prove: a work as entertaining, musically exciting and substantial as »Das Rhinegold« is absolutely suited as a concert performance. And thanks to the acoustics of the Elbphilharmonie, Wagner’s enormous »Ring« orchestra’s richness in sound can reach audiences at its best.
