René Kollo’s international career began in 1969, when he was the youngest tenor in Bayreuth singing the helmsman in Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman. He sang a different Wagner role at the renowned festival every year thereafter. In 1976 followed the title role in »Siegfried« in Patrice Chéreau’s »Centenary Ring« and in 1981 the role of Tristan under Daniel Barenboim. Since then, Kollo has been regarded as one of the great Wagner tenors of the 20th century. But Kollo has made a name for himself not only as a Wagner interpreter: born in Berlin in 1937, the heldentenor also has a close collaboration with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, with whom he appeared in roles by Tchaikovsky, Verdi and Britten. After forays into operetta and television, René Kollo is now chamber singer with the Bavarian State Opera and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He can now appears with a farewell programme to mark his 80th birthday at the Laeiszhalle.
