The Quatuor Modigliani has made a name for itself as one of the most sought-after quartets of its generation, appearing in the world’s top concert halls and string quartet series. It was a special honour for the four French musicians to be the first string quartet to play in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall in March 2017. With flair and wit, power and depth, the quartet presents a programme of French music tonight, with works by Saint-Saëns, Ravel and Philippe Hersant.

These three compositions cover a musical century. Maurice Ravel’s enormously rhythmic string quartet, rich in melody and colour, was first performed in 1904. The Saint-Saëns work was composed in 1899, a time when Saint-Saëns’s great success as a revolutionary young composer, piano and organ virtuoso, was long behind him. The youngest work in this recital comes from the pen of Philippe Hersant, who has been awarded countless composition prizes, among them the 1996 »Prix Maurice Ravel«.
