After its brilliant victory at the ARD Music Competition in 2004, it is difficult to imagine the classical music scene without Quatour Ebène. The quartet is already well known in Hamburg following several acclaimed guest performances – another good reason to invite the ensemble to the Elbphilharmonie’s opening celebrations.

The programme selected by the ensemble suits them perfectly. The French musicians have already issued a highly praised recording of Mozart’s expressive Quartet in D minor. The piece is regarded as perhaps the most passionate string quartet composition before Beethoven, whose no-less eloquent Op. 95 is therefore a suitable accompaniment.

Finally, Ravel’s only string quartet reflects other, somewhat oriental , musical styles, thereby creating a unique musical language that frees itself from the classical form. Quatuor Ebène will be in its element with this quintessentially French composition – not least due to its love of crossover!
