Maurizio Pollini is one of the legendary artists of our time. The Italian grand seigneur of the keyboard turned 75 in January 2017. Although he originally conquered the classical world with the works of Poland’s national hero Chopin, he has always been especially fond of contemporary music. Thus he joined forces in the 1960s with Claudio Abbado to support Luigi Nono, a composer who openly proclaimed his Marxist convictions; Nono wrote two piano pieces for him. Abbado and Pollini went on to perform together not only on the world’s leading concert platforms, but also gave concerts for factory workers and students in an endeavour to make classical music available to as many people as possible.
