Philippe Jaroussky
Arias by Francesco Cavalli and Claudio Monteverdi
Warm yet crystal-clear, powerful but at the same time delicate and coaxing – these characteristics give Philippe Jaroussky’s unique countertenor voice its fascination. If you hear him sing, you understand the frenzy of enthusiasm that the masters of this high register aroused among the audience in previous centuries. With his new programme, the French singer plunges back into the past, to the very beginnings of opera. The focus is on arias by Francesco Cavalli, who joined the choir of St Mark’s in Venice, led by Monteverdi, in 1616 as a 14-year-old boy soprano before he went on to compose some 40 operas that were of decisive importance for the development of the then young genre.
