Of the many amazing bands from Buenos Aires, this one really stands out: the ten-strong Orquesta Típica El Afronte transfers the dancing spirit of tango to the present day, and brings all its shades and nuances – from ecstasy and melancholy – to the stage.
The ensemble was founded in2004, and soon went on to make a name for itself in the milonga scene of Buenos Aires. The musicians are not content to revel in the nostalgia of the past: they are keen to give new developments their due.
However, they adhere to one inalterable maxim in the process: their sound remains acoustic, representing a clear contrast to today’s electro-tango. Dramatic, compact, powerful, frenetic: these are just a few of the words that critics use to describe an El Afronte show. This is an orchestra that now causes a sensation all the way from Sweden to Columbia.
