»They work with sounds, we work with sounds«, answers Anna-Maria Torkel when asked about her latest project »voice X change«. Together with three other NDR Vokalensemble singers, the alto is keen to escape the traditional concert hall and head to a more informal setting: clubs where DJs play music and people dance.
The club vibe and classical music – some might wonder how those can fit together. But the four singers have a clear concept: the evening starts with short vocal quartets, which are then taken up, sampled or developed through improvisation by DJs, percussionists or bands. Through interaction with the singers, the classical vocal passages are transformed, remixed or covered – with a gradual transition to a club night together.
