NDR Kammerorchester / Albrecht Mayer
Mozart / Fiala
Celebrity visitor to the NDR Kammerorchester: Albrecht Mayer, solo oboist with the Berlin Philharmonic, is a guest with a dual role as conductor and soloist in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall. However, on this evening he will be playing the oboe’s big sister: the cor anglais, whose pear-shaped bell produces the instrument’s deep, warm sound.
»It needn’t always be Mozart,« said Mayer in 2015 when his CD »Lost and Found« was released. That CD features an enchanting cor anglais concerto by the Mozart contemporary Joseph Fiala, and this is also the highlight of the programme in this concert.
However, there’s no rule against playing a little Mozart – and why should good musicians give a wide berth to the oh-so famous »Kleine Nachtmusik« just because it is normally played with so little inspiration?
To close this evening, the NDR Kammerorchester, which is made up of musicians from the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, play Mozart’s Symphony No. 29 in A Major, KV 201 – one of the composer’s most important compositions from the early Salzburg years.
