NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Wiebke Lehmkuhl / Semyon Bychkov
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 3
Musical evolution
Gustav Mahler had nothing more modest in mind than to embrace »the whole world« with his symphonies. And music lovers all over the world admire him to this day for his overwhelming musical panoramas. One particularly striking example of this world-embracing oeuvre is his Third Symphony, which is not heard frequently in the concert hall owing to its length and the considerable forces required to perform it. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra plays Mahler’s Third tonight under the baton of Russian star conductor Semyon Bychkov, who is currently music director of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. The vocal soloist is internationally sought-after alto Wiebke Lehmkuhl from North Germany.
