NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Thomas Hengelbrock
Lutosławski / Mozart
Many myths have grown up around the Mozart Requiem. The commission brought by an anonymous messenger, the composer’s early death while he was still working on the score and the unfinished manuscript – all this is perfect thriller material. But Mozart’s most important sacred work really doesn’t need this kind of publicity: the music alone expresses a consummate vision.
The concerts open with another impressive piece of funeral music, written by Polish composer Witold Lutosławski in 1955 to mark the tenth anniversary of the death of Béla Bartók.
