Many myths have grown up around the Mozart Requiem. The commission brought by an anonymous messenger, the composer’s early death while he was still working on the score and the unfinished manuscript – all this is perfect thriller material. But Mozart’s most important sacred work really doesn’t need this kind of publicity: the music alone expresses a consummate vision.

The sad beauty of the »Introitus«, the wild terror of the »Dies irae«, the trombone solo in the »Tuba mirum«, the almost obsessive figures in the strings in the »Confutatis« – there are many passages where Mozart was way ahead of his time. Together with the Balthasar-Neumann-Chor and a select group of soloists, Thomas Hengelbrock and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra perform Mozart’s opus ultimum at the Elbphilharmonie for the first time.

The concerts open with another impressive piece of funeral music, written by Polish composer Witold Lutosławski in 1955 to mark the tenth anniversary of the death of Béla Bartók.
