Louise Farrenc: an exceptional phenomenon
Composition has always been a male domain – as a woman, Louise Farrenc is one of the few exceptions in music history. The French composer’s models were Beethoven and Haydn, and Mendelssohn and Schumann were her German competition. Her work was performed internationally when she was alive, but the self-confident composer was soon forgotten after her death – unjustly so according to the Financial Times. In 2018, the newspaper said of Farrenc’s Symphony No. 3: »The score is so well written that it deserves a prominent place in the history of the early Romantic symphony.«
British conductor Duncan Ward now breathes new life into that Third Symphony. Despite only being in his mid-thirties, Ward has already conducted world-class orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
