New work for the »queen of instruments«
For his fourth and final programme with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra as part of the extensive Esa-Pekka Salonen spotlight in 2021–23, the multi-talented Finn presents another of his own new compositions. With solo concertos for piano, violin, cello and, most recently, the clarinet, Salonen has already demonstrated a special sense for the tonal and technical qualities of the respective instruments. In his new work »Sinfonia concertante« the prolific composer turns his attention to the »queen of instruments«, the organ, which can easily replace an orchestra with its multitude of pipes and stops. The Elbphilharmonie’s spectacular surround instrument is played by the titular organist Iveta Apkalna.
