As a result of the new Germany-wide coronavirus restrictions that have been issued, all concerts in the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle have been cancelled from 2–30 November. This event has had to be cancelled. If you bought your tickets in the Elbphilharmonie’s online shop, you will be refunded the purchase price via the payment method used for the original booking – you don’t need to do anything. On 30 October 1945 Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, the first chief conductor of the North-West German Radio Symphony Orchestra, led the orchestra in its inaugural concert in the Laeiszhalle, which had been spared from wartime destruction. The spirit of optimism at the end of 1945 prevails again today, not least thanks to the new concert hall on the edge of the Hamburg docklands. The celebrations to mark the orchestra’s 75th anniversary are crowned by a festive concert at the Elbphilharmonie: rank Peter Zimmermann plays the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, which was recorded with the newly-founded orchestra in July 1945 by no lesser artist than Yehudi Menuhin.
