Together with their principal conductor, Thomas Hengelbrock, the NDR Symphony Orchestra presents a programme filled with engaging Italian melodies. Dutch violinist Janine Jansen performs one of her favourite pieces, Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1.
Igor Stravinsky’s ballet, Pulcinella, is a perfect example of neo-baroque. The composer took old, 18th century Italian tunes and added modern harmonies and transverse rhythms to give them a twentieth century touch. The result is a brilliantly vibrant and light-hearted score.
Classical clarity and ease as well as southern "joie de vivre" are characteristic of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Symphony No. 4, the so-called "Italian Symphony". It is the artistic result of the composer’s journey to the land in which "the lemons bloom". Landscape, temperament, and dances - for example the Neapolitan "Saltarello" - and Italy’s songs inspired the composer’s "carefree piece". "The Italian Symphony will be the most joyful piece I have ever written...," Mendelssohn noted.
Janine Jansen gives the concert the final touch with a milestone of German Romanticism: Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 in g minor was selected by Jansen for one of her earliest CD recordings.
