Hollenbeck: Music for Percussion Quartet and Big Band
Feuerwerk der Polyrhythmen
John Hollenbeck, who was born in Binghamton, Upstate New York, in 1968 is an »And« man, someone who combines qualities, be they related or opposing: drummer and composer, sound poet and rhythm engineer, orchestra leader and chamber musician, jazz and modern compositions. He worked as a university lecturer in Berlin for eleven years before moving to Montreal in 2016 – he is a musical wanderer who always heads off on his journeys with the same companions.
After apprenticeships in the bands of Bob Brookmeyer, one of the greatest figures of modern jazz, Hollenbeck made a name for himself in the contemporary big-band scene with his Claudia Quartet and the compositions and arrangements he wrote for top-class big bands such as the Village Vanguard Orchestra, the WDR Big Band and the Orchestre National de Jazz.
The NDR Bigband’s performance with a percussion quartet – in which Hollenbeck plays alongside Marcio Doctor, the NDR Bigband’s regular percussionist, and Raphael Meinhart and Patty Brennan – promises a grand display of polyrhythms, with the four percussionists repeatedly coming up against the sound of the big band’s wind instruments: refined and robust, thrilling and vibrant.
