Matthias Goerne / Markus Hinterhäuser
Winter Journeys / Lieder Recital
The setting of Wilhelm Müller’s poems, which Franz Schubert immortalised in 24 songs in 1827, is bleak and covered with snow. Schubert lets his lone wanderer – rejected by love – embark on a path from which »no one has ever returned«. In the intimate circle created by the gifted Schubert performer Matthias Goerne and Markus Hinterhäuser at the piano, South African artist William Kentridge has designed images – his personal visual projections of »Remembrance and Oblivion« – to accompany Schubert’s fictional and deeply romantic landscapes of death.
