Mariza
»Mariza canta Amália« – 2G+ AND PHYSICAL DISTANCE
Extrovert and extravagant – those are two adjectives often used to describe this peroxide-blonde bundle of energy. With great delicacy and respect, Mariza has added dashes of colour from various continents to Portuguese fado. She is without doubt the most charismatic fadista of the early 21st century – and she has freed the genre of cliches for a global audience.
The 47-year-old singer, who was born in Mozambique, began singing fado from an early age, in Lisbon’s historic Mouraria quarter. She has always enriched fado by adding influences from Africa, Spain, Brazil and the Cape Verde Islands, and built bridges between the genre and flamenco, jazz and pop. Breaking with the traditional fado line-up of instruments, she has been known to add a cello, accordion, trumpet or even an entire symphony orchestra.
