World Premiere in 2012 – And Already a Modern Paradigm
Not many new compositions have the privilege to become part of the repertoire, instead of vanishing into a drawer after the first performance. George Benjamin, the Elbphilharmonie’s current Artist in Residence, pulled off this hat trick with his opera »Written on Skin«. Premiered in 2012, it became an instant modern classic, with the French newspaper Le Monde even calling it the best opera since »Wozzeck«.
For the performance at the Elbphilharmonie as part of George Benjamin’s »Multiverse«, the composer takes the conductor’s rostrum, and is joined by several other artists from the world premiere, among them American countertenor Bejun Mehta and the brilliant Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
