Liederabend: Mikhail Petrenko / Iain Burnside
Ausgewählte Lieder von Sergej Rachmaninow und Piotr I. Tschaikowsky
With his outstanding vocal and dramatic skills, Russian singer Mikhail Petrenko is one of today’s most sought-after basses. He has conquered the top opera houses in Europe and the USA in Wagner roles, but he is also a keen performer of art songs. Tonight he presents Russian songs by Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, accompanied by Iain Burnside on the piano.
Unlike his piano music, Sergei Rachmaninov’s songs are as good as unknown in Germany. They are based on poems by German and Russian writers, among them Heinrich Heine and Alexander Pushkin. Piotr Tchaikovsky in turn was also a prolific songwriter, composing some 100 songs that are mostly based on poems by Ukrainian and Russian authors; Tolstoy is probably the best-known among them.
