Johannes Brahms: German Folk Songs
Both Christiane Karg’s and Mauro Peter’s sensational debuts at the Salzburg Festival proved to be the breakthrough to international careers. Since then the pair has been an exceptional musical presence on the international stage, with exciting opera projects and insightful lieder interpretations.
Together with Helmut Deutsch, in whose lieder class Mauro Peter previously studied, they perform Johannes Brahms’ »Deutsche Volkslieder« in Hamburg, the composer’s birthplace. German folk songs were hugely popular in the nineteenth century and were regarded as a blend of down-to-earthiness and higher truth. They have influenced several of Brahms’ works, and towards the end of his life the composer dedicated this collection to the genre.
