Lady Blackbird
Elbjazz 2022
Lady Blackbird’s voice sounds familiar, which is not surprising: around ten years ago she released the highly successful single »Boomerang«, which was played in a loop on R’n’B stations, under her real name Marley Munroe. It is only now, with the dark and minimalistic Black Acid Soul, that her voice, forever reminiscent of the jazz divas of the past, can unfold its full potential. The album combines original compositions and covers, including interpretations of pieces by Nina Simone that practically hurt and have an almost brutal quality to them. But at the end of a valley of pain, grief and despair, consolation awaits, musically packaged in psychedelic opulence à la Sun Ra. Lady Blackbird is convinced that you can find hope even in the face of overwhelming (heart-) ache: »It’s like an amputation – initially, you wouldn’t be thankful for it. But in the end, it will save your life!«
Note on purchasing tickets: because there is limited seating in the Elbphilharmonie, festivalgoers must register for the concerts in the Elbphilharmonie, in addition to purchasing an Elbjazz festival ticket. Elbjazz festival tickets are available at www.elbjazz.com. When you buy your Elbjazz festival ticket there, you can also book a concert in the Elbphilharmonie as part of the same booking process (subject to availability).
At the »Elbjazz« festival the Hamburg harbour is the backdrop for a unique music event: since 2010 thousands of guests have been thrilled by one of the largest European jazz festivals where the unmistakable maritime flair of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg meets spectacular venues and musical diversity. The concerts and the colourful supporting programme of the festival take place at changing locations north and south of the Elbe river.
