Spotlight on Mieczysław Weinberg
»This man,« said Gidon Kremer about the Soviet composer Mieczysław Weinberg, »was completely underestimated for many years; he sank into oblivion. I actually believed myself that he was nothing more than a second-rate Shostakovich. What a mistake that was! On the contrary, Weinberg had a voice entirely his own.« And the Latvian artist has been making this individual voice known to concert audiences for quite a long time.
In Gidon Kremer’s second concert as part of the Elbphilharmonie’s Weinberg spotlight, he presents the new project »Chronicle of Current Events«, in which works by Weinberg are combined with visualisations by Russian artists inspired by these works. Director Kirill Serebrennikov, who recently caused a stir in Hamburg with his production of »Nabucco«, selected the visualisations.
It took Mieczysław Weinberg a long time to emerge from the shadow cast by his friend Dmitri Shostakovich. But the work of the Soviet composer with Polish-Jewish roots has been capturing the world’s concert halls for some years now – not least thanks to the support of the famous violinist Gidon Kremer, who is one of the composer’s greatest advocates. To mark the 100th anniversary of Weinberg’s birth, which the composer would have celebrated in 2019, Kremer gives two concerts at the Elbphilharmonie together with his ensemble Kremerata Baltica.
