Kenny Barron Quartet
Elbphilharmonie Sommer
From sought-after sideman to gifted soloist
Lee Morgan, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz – the list of musicians pianist Kenny Barron has performed with reads like a Who’s Who of bebop, hard bop and mainstream jazz. Barron was a sought-after sideman for many years, but he, now almost 80, is also a gifted soloist and bandleader. His swinging yet slightly edgy style, occasionally reminiscent of piano icon Thelonious Monk, boasts its own unique elegance.
The pianist says that the most important influence on his improvisational style is the multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef, who himself incorporated elements of African, Latin American and Far Eastern musical cultures into jazz. The Philadelphia-born piano virtuoso’s repertoire also includes compositions featuring samba influences as a result.
