Juan José Mosalini y su Gran Orquesta de Tango
Juan José Mosalini is without a doubt one of the world’s best bandoneon virtuosos. With his Gran Orquestra de Tango, he represents and renews in a unique fashion the Tango Nuevo that originated with Astor Piazzolla. Mosalini began his career in the 1960s in leading Argentine tango orchestras, working with Susana Rinaldi and Astor Piazolla, and setting up the avant-garde ensemble Guardia Nueva together with Daniel Binelli. In 1977 he fled from Argentina’s military dictatorship and settled in Paris, where he founded a trio in the early 1980s that modernised traditional tangos by adding jazz elements as a variation of the Tango Nuevo. At the high point of his career he set up the Gran Orquestra de Tango, a large-scale ensemble of the kind customary in 40s and 50s Argentina. With this band he reworks tango history without descending into nostalgia.
