Joshua Redman / Ron Miles / Scott Colley / Dave King
Elbphilharmonie Summer
The pure beauty of his tone and the instinctive certainty with which he creates sweeping arcs in his improvisations are the constants in the playing of tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman. With these qualities, he remained a unique figure on the jazz landscape in the 1990s in a variety of different line-ups. Redman is the connecting link between the new jazz concept of our time, with its openness to a range of influences, and the great American jazz tradition of the 20th century. Joshua’s father Dewey Redman was one of the grand masters of bebop and, in particular, of free jazz. In 1976 he founded his band Old and New Dreams together with three former members of the Ornette Coleman Quartet, with which he celebrated the unbridled freedom of avant-garde jazz. Joshua Redman pursues this particular tradition with the album »Still Dreaming«. Together with Ron Miles (trumpet), Scott Colley (bass) and Dave King (drums) he pays tribute to his father and directs his attention to both the present and the future of jazz: hard-hitting, full of energy and unbridled.
