Over 300 years ago, in the year 1696, the cello was built that French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras plays today. And in the same year, the great Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi made his first public appearance at St Mark’s in Venice. At the Elbphilharmonie’s »Venice« Festival, Queyras and his partner on the harpsichord, Michael Behringer, transport the audience back to the 17th century to experience at first hand the musical legacy of the legendary lagoon city.

An authentic sound is assured not only by Queyras’s cello, but also by his thorough knowledge of historic performing practice. Tonight’s programme features Vivaldi’s Six Cello Sonatas, which Italy’s most famous Baroque composer wrote between 1720 and 1730 as practice pieces for his pupils in the Venetian orphanage Ospedale della Pietà. The orphanage was one of Venice’s four major music schools, and Vivaldi spent some 30 years as a teacher there.
