Hamburger Camerata / Bouchkov / Hontvári
Sibelius / Mozart
Magic moment
The Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, is the only solo concerto that Sibelius wrote, and with it he gave the violin repertoire a concerto that combines the instrument’s extremes to perfect effect: on the one hand the work calls for virtuosity and flow from the soloist, but on the other, for absolute transparency and clarity of tone and phrasing. The last symphony that Mozart wrote is nothing short of legendary: the composer integrates into the final movement of the work, which may never have seen performance during his lifetime, a large-scale fugato. Scholars analysing the symphony found it so divine that only the ruling god of Mount Olympus was good enough to supply a nickname: Jupiter.
