There can be no denying that Richard Strauss wrote history as an opera composer: Salome, Elektra, Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf Naxos, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Capriccio are works of intoxicating drama and overwhelming beauty. But before he discovered his talent for opera, Strauss had already evolved a unique mastery of the tone poem genre, to which he contributed a number of important works.
When Strauss set about writing his »Alpensinfonie« in 1911, he had really completed his set of magnificent tone poems. Nonetheless, with this piece he rounded off the trilogy that he had begun with »Ein Heldenleben« and the »Sinfonia domestica«, a trilogy that revolves around the depiction of nature in music.
The Philharmonic State Orchestra focuses its attention on these two creative periods in a single concert: Strauss’s operas and his compositions for orchestra.
