Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, written in 1902, is »pure music«. The work is not based on any literary text or any programme, either declared or concealed, that needs deciphering to understand the music. This is absolute music.
Mahler himself said of the symphony: »…All I can say is that there is no programme here except for the principle that I compose my music without any reason or occasion. The music is inside me, it’s inside my mind and needs to be written. There is no alternative, that is how it has to be. Let no one ask me why…!«
Alma Mahler, who became the composer’s wife on 29 February 1902, was to say in a radio interview in 1960: »He is not moaning any more here, there is no more self-pity: he wants to assert himself. … The Fifth is not visionary music, it is a symphony of realities.«
