Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra / Kent Nagano
Lux aeterna
Bach, Messiaen, Bruckner – these composers are united by their belief in God and a world-view that has its source in that faith: they see their own creative power as a gift from the Lord that they need to place at the service of a mission to benefit humanity. An unusual philosophy, which the Philharmonic State Orchestra translates into music at the festival »Lux aeterna«.
Seen in this context, Bruckner’s music is quite unique, combining as it does extreme opposites: it is secular in character, but religious at the same time; it is conservative yet progressive in equal measure, pointing to the future. It is based on a set of rules, but breaks these time after time with expressive means. It demonstrates a puristic realism, yet uses this to produce mystical impressions and metaphysical experiences. It resembles a cosmos, but at the same time is a drama about the subjective self.
