She is regarded as one of the most versatile singers in contemporary music: Acclaimed as »Hamburg’s Avant-garde-Queen« by the newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt, Frauke Aulbert loves voice and vocal experiments. Her voice covers an extraordinary range of nearly four octaves, exceeding the borders of vocal ability. She repeatedly draws on extended singing techniques including overtone and undertone singing or multiphonics.
In her current project, Frauke Aulbert addresses an artistic discipline that generally brings baseball caps and ghetto blasters to mind: beatboxing. However, Frauke Aulbert examines the art form detached from its origins in the world of hip-hop. She focuses on the underlying techniques and uses them for fascinating sound experiments. She develops neo-avant-garde sound art with the rhythmic language and beatboxing elements of works specially created for this programme by young composers – an exciting start to the new Elbphilharmonie series »Below Deck« in Kaistudio 1, deep down in the cavity of the historic warehouse.
