Film Screening »Ellis« / 10:00-17:30
Reflektor Nils Frahm
Nils Frahm and the French musician Woodkid have endowed the film »Ellis« with an intense atmosphere, using sparing instrumentation and soundscapes so subtle, they are almost imperceptible. All the proceeds from the film have gone to the »Sea-Watch« initiative, which rescues refugees in distress on the Mediterranean. There are few more suitable locations for showing this film than the Emigration Museum BallinStadt Hamburg.
Please note: The film will be shown twice an hour on the three days of the festival, on and at half past the hour, from 10:00 to 17:30. Admission is free.
For some 12 million emigrants, Ellis Island was the first part of America that they saw – their first sight of the free world. The island on the Hudson River opposite New York City was the central gateway to the USA for immigrants until 1952. In the film made by French photographer JR, an immigrant played by Robert de Niro wanders through the empty wards and corridors of the immigrants’ hospital, and his dark memories of his escape from Europe, homelessness and the hope of a new life catch up with him.
