Erland Cooper & Henrik Lindstrand
Journeys of discovery in sound
For the pianist and composer Henrik Lindstrand, recording his first solo album in 2017 marked the closing of a circle that began, almost exactly to the second, forty years earlier. Back then in his Swedish hometown, at the age of three, he sat at the same piano as the one on which he would record his debut. After many years as a member of the Danish band Kashmir, Lindstrand has, as a solo musician, experienced something of a second spring in the love affair with his first instrument. He is always looking for new, abstract sounds – and seeks to avoid the simple and obvious. He is accompanied on his challenging journeys of musical discovery by the outstanding string quartet Halvcirkel.
There are very few people who manage to narrate such impressive stories with their music as the Scottish composer Erland Cooper, who takes over for the second half of the evening. The latest evidence of this talent is delivered in his recent album Folded Landscapes. The experimental work is shaped by Cooper’s connection to the environment, and deals predominantly with his observations of climate change. It was developed in partnership with the Scottish Ensemble, a collective of pioneering musicians who blend a variety of art forms.
