A brilliant, classic sound like Mozart, popular moments as found in Schubert und Mahler: Kurt Weill’s Second Symphony is an often underestimated masterpiece that was absent from concert programmes for a long time. It is followed in this concert by the cherry on tonight’s cake: a new symphony by minimal music pioneer Philip Glass, in which Dennis Russel Davies, a specialist for unconventional music, conducts the Dresden Philharmonic.
Equally unconventional is Philip Glass’s homage to David Bowie. The new work has only just had its first performance in Europe, and it can already be heard at the Elbphilharmonie: a tribute set for large ensemble to a pop icon who wrote music history with his album »Lodger«.
»This is a fantastic symphony. It adds a new dimension to symphonic thinking that the music on [Bowie’s] 1979 album only hints at,« published the LA Times after the premiere. The evening gets off to a lively start with dances from Leonard Bernstein’s musical »On the Town«.
