Intricate groove
Alongside saxophonists such as Courtney Pine and Iain Ballamy, the pianist Django Bates was one of the architects of the first British jazz renaissance from the late 1980s. He has played in a piano trio, with big bands and with orchestras, and he now comes to the Laeiszhalle as a solo artist for the first time. The music of the unconventional stylist is a collage-like modern jazz with pop, punk and folk influences.
Bates, who was born in 1960, has engaged intensively with the music of Charlie Parker and the Beatles, and he refers to South African music and to contemporary classical music in equal measure. His compositions are often intricate and feature opposing rhythmic and melodic lines, without sacrificing any of its vibrant groove.
Jazz with humour, playfulness and tonal mastery that can also sometimes display an inner fragility: »I don’t want to write music that only aims to please. I want the listener to experience a whole spectrum of emotions, from sadness to roaring laughter.«
