Die schöne Müllerin
Musicbanda Franui / Florian Boesch / Nikolaus Habjan – Hamburg International Music Festival
Harp, hammered dulcimer and puppetry
It’s always worth paying attention when Musicbanda Franui conjure up a new project. Not only does the chamber ensemble from the Austrian Alps make music on an impressively high level, they also regularly join forces with artists from completely different fields: cabaret artists, video artists and – in their latest production – the bass-baritone Florian Boesch and the captivating puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan. Together, they sing, act and play Franz Schubert’s »Die schöne Müllerin«.
»To wander is the miller’s delight«: this is the first line of a song cycle that follows a journeyman on his convoluted path. He finds work at a mill, falls in love with the miller’s beautiful daughter and ultimately, in his quest for meaning, loses himself in a world of heartache. Franui approach the songs with an unusual instrumental line-up: the double bass, trumpet and clarinet are accompanied by the harp and hammered dulcimer. In combination with Boesch’s enthralling voice and the inspired hand puppets, Schubert’s music reaches new heights – this is deeply poignant art.
