Czech Sextets / Pavel Haas Quartet
Czech it out!
Hardly any Czech string quartet continues the tradition of the proverbial Bohemian sound as convincingly as the internationally acclaimed Pavel Haas Quartet. The ensemble studied with the famous Amadeus Quartet, and won the prestigious string quartet competition »Premio Paolo Borciani« in Italy.
For its concert at the Elbphilharmonie, the Pavel Haas Quartet has selected Bedřich Smetana’s String Quartet No. 2, which is characterised by continuously shifting moods, and whose modernness indicates the onset of the 20th century. In addition, the four musicians perform two string sextets together with their former viola player Pavel Nikl and the young cellist Tomáš Jamník. Whereas Dvorák’s composition brims with enthusiasm and enchanting melodies, the gloom and melancholy of Bohuslav Martinůs’s Sextet appear to portend the horrors of World War II.
