Baritone Christian Gerhaher has long been one of the top interpreters of German lieder. He and pianist Gerold Huber both come from the Bavarian town of Straubing, and they have been appearing together as a successful duo for years now, winning the most sought-after international prizes for their lieder recordings.
One of the duo’s focuses is the work of Johannes Brahms, who ranks alongside Schubert and Schumann as one of the leading German-speaking song composers. As a »Hamburg lad«, Gerhaher is hesitant by nature, but when he comes across inspiring texts he can belt out songs like a volcano erupting. And it’s pure inspiration which speaks to the audience from this selection of the 200-plus songs that survive from Brahms’s pen: the product of a fertile composer’s life, from the fiery 21-year-old hothead who swore by true love in his Op. 7 cycle »Treue Liebe«, and as a mature master looking back wistfully on his own artistic progress in »Meine Lieder« (My Songs). A whole world lies between the two works.
