»With the Chamber Orchestra of Europe I don’t feel like a conductor. I feel like a musician who is making music with them.« With these words, legendary conductor Bernard Haitink was basically speaking for all his colleagues who have played together with this exceptional ensemble in the last 40 years. Be it founding father Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Pierre Boulez or Yannick Nézet-Séguin – they all go into raptures over the open and warm-hearted team spirit of the orchestra, which is organised along democratic lines.
And international star soloist Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili has been a fan of the COE since her first appearance with it: in 2012 they played the Beethoven Violin Concerto together. Tonight they celebrate their reunion with this repertoire classic – this time under the baton of Robin Ticciati.
Love and power are the subjects of the other works on the programme. Jörg Widmann’s chamber-music piece »Liebeslied« dates from 2010. Héctor Berlioz painted a colourful picture of grand feelings in his homage to »Roméo et Juliette«. And Beethoven conjured up the spirit of liberty in 1809 in his incidental music to Goethe’s »Egmont«.
