Bacewicz / Janáček / Beethoven
Chamber music that tells stories
Three different works for strings – two of them with the same name – make for an exciting, varied programme and an inspiring concert evening.
The work by the Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz could equally serve as the film score for a thriller: Dramatic, cutting violins are rhythmically accompanied underneath by sombre bass tones. It is followed by Leoš Janáček’s first string quartet, which refers in its subtitle »The Kreutzer Sonata« to Leo Tolstoy’s eponymous story. Tolstoy was in turn inspired by Beethoven’s »Kreutzer Sonata«, which can be heard after the interval.
