Highlights of the Baroque Concerto

Johann Sebastian Bach’s famous Brandenburg Concertos take their name from the Margrave of Brandenburg, to whom they are dedicated, and are brilliant highlights of the Baroque instrumental-concerto genre. The Concerto No. 6 is set for strings alone, and builds up from a gentle pace in the first movement to a danceful finale.

Richard Wagner’s Prelude to his opera »Tristan und Isolde« is the iconic expression of unfulfilled yearning that lasts even beyond death. The famous Tristan chord, which hangs in a harmonic vacuum, also cast open the door to New Music.

When the »devil’s violinist« Niccolò Paganini started to play, dozens fainted in the audience, particularly the ladies. It remains to be seen whether this feat can be pulled off with the Variations for Two Cellos.
Arvo Pärt’s spiritual work »Fratres« is the embodiment of simplicity. This makes listening to it an experience nothing short of mystical: this is music of unfathomable peace and tranquillity.
