»The music was always there: roots reggae, rocksteady, ska. It’s a part of me.« Zara McFarlane grew up in London as the daughter of Jamaican immigrants – no surprise, then, that the singer has had a deep affinity for the music of the Caribbean island since she was a small child. Voice and rhythm are the most important elements in the British musician’s music. She studied jazz singing and has recorded albums with young London talents such as Binker and Moses. With her splendid, scintillatingly clear voice, which reminds some of Nina Simone, others of Cassandra Wilson, she blends hypnotic jazz, blues and soul.
At the »Elbjazz« festival the Hamburg harbour is the backdrop for a unique music event: since 2010 thousands of guests have been thrilled by one of the largest European jazz festivals where the unmistakable maritime flair of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg meets spectacular venues and musical diversity. The concerts and the colourful supporting programme of the festival take place at changing locations north and south of the Elbe river – and for the fourth time in a row at the Elbphilharmonie in 2020.
