She has been close friends with the Symphoniker Hamburg for several years now: pianist Martha Argerich regularly comes back to her beloved Laeiszhalle to appear before the highly-esteemed Hamburg public – including, but not limited to, the Martha Argerich Festival.

This evening’s concert is entirely devoted to the music of Maurice Ravel. After the First World War, the French composer dedicated the individual movements of his piano suite »Le tombeau de Couperin« to fallen comrades. And at the same time to the French Baroque composer François Couperin. In his G minor Piano Concerto, first performed in 1932, Martha Argerich takes the solo part: a thoroughly exciting example of 1920s music that mixes Spanish sounds with jazz elements. Last but not least, the »Rhapsodie espagnole«, in which he sings the praises of his mother’s homeland, was Ravel’s entrance ticket to the world of orchestral music.
