The overture to Mozart’s »Zauberflöte« – the last work of his to be premiered before his premature death – is atypically upbeat in mood: here, the composer does not place the characters from the opera in opposition to one another, but instead brings them together. By the same token, Beethoven’s Triple Concerto is marked by harmonious interaction between the piano, the violin, the cello and the orchestra: this is a joyful work of »lavish imagination« with a majestic dance-like finale, performed here by the young British conductor Ben Gernon and a trio of illustrious soloists.

After the interval comes another evergreen: there can be no question that Tchaikovsky wrote several works that will last for all eternity. But as with other art forms, there are classical compositions that outshine all others. The ballet genre reaches consummation in Tchaikovsky’s »Swan Lake«.
