For Martin Grubinger, percussion playing is a high-performance sport. The Austrian star percussionist even works with sports doctors to optimise his fitness routine. And it’s easy to imagine the lactic acid building up during the percussion concerto composed specially by Friedrich Cerha for the whirlwind drummer: bursting with energy, it’s a pandemonium of sound that summons up everything that hammers, clatters, rings and grinds. A thrilling sound spectacle for the eyes and ears, which Grubinger presents with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. The concerto’s vital power finds an interesting continuation in the Fourth Symphony of the Danish composer Carl Nielsen, which impresses with harsh contrasts, ostentatious sounds and the incisive use of the timpani.
