After Symphonies nos. 4, 5 and 10, the principal guest conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra and self-confessed Shostakovich fan Krzysztof Urbański performs another symphony by the great Russian composer. The rarely-heard Twelfth Symphony is subtitled »The Year 1917«, with Shostakovich professing – at least on the surface – to be an enthusiastic supporter of Lenin’s October Revolution. The victory of Communism is celebrated with thunderous drumming and a noisy finale.

In response to the symphony’s first performance in 1961, the Soviet Communist Party accepted Shostakovich as a member. But it is open to doubt whether this was what the composer was really aiming for. Aggressive energy – purely musical in motivation – is also the hallmark of Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, where the soloist and the orchestra face each other as equal rivals. Sought-after Croatian pianist Dejan Lazić returns to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra to perform the tricky solo part.
