The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra has making guest appearances in Asia since 1987, most recently in 2018 under Alan Gilbert before he took up his post as chief conductor. Before their next Asian tour to mark the orchestra’s 75th anniversary, which will take Gilbert and his musicians to such cities as Macau, Shanghai, Beijing and Seoul, the tour programme can also be heard in Hamburg.
The »Concerto for Orchestra« by the Chinese-American composer Zhou Tian is a tribute to the host country, China; the work was nominated for the Grammy award in 2018. From its home country, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra performs one of the most popular symphonies in the repertoire: two crisp tutti beats in E flat, and the music takes off! In his »Eroica« Beethoven calls for absolute concentration from the listener from the very first second. It is the first symphony in music history not designed merely as highbrow entertainment: in addition, the »Eroica« aims to impart political and moral ideas to the audience.
